Editorial Review for The Morgan Dining Room – by Katie Heffernan
The Scene
The Morgan mansion's original dining room, now a fine-dining destination in the family's museum, feels polite and gallery-like. Portraits of Morgans past hang like artwork in the white-walled, high-ceilinged, wood-floored space. Matrons of the arts with free afternoons have conditioned the servers to their leisurely afternoon pace.
The Food
It's easy to imagine wealthy banker J.P. Morgan sitting before four-course platefuls of these early 20th century classics. A flaky Swiss chard tart is enriched with ricotta for a promising start. The potential is fulfilled by a fresh vegetable chicken fricassee dribbled in white wine cream sauce, and a striped bass resting on deliciously sticky butternut squash risotto. Oddly, the namesake Pierpont salad is the pitfall--the mound of romaine, chicken slices, cubed cheddar and honey-mustard is like an unsophisticated recipe from J.P.'s childhood lunchbox. Forget the flaw with seasonal sugar-dusted cobbler or the perfect lemony-vanilla panna cotta.

Lunch at the Morgan Dining Room was a truly special experience, from the warm greeting of the host to the understated decor of the room to the professional service of the staff and of course the tasty food. I loved the ambiance and all the details of the plates and cutlery, the paint color on the wall, the low couches, the salt cellar, the fresh fresh raspberries on the raspberry lime rickey. The bread was very fresh and delicious. The menu read very well with consize options that pleased everyone. I especially liked the chicken fricassee. My colleagues raved about the special salad, the swiss chard tart, and of course the lobster salad. What's even better is that it was so reasonably priced. I cannot wait to go back and perhaps try the more casual Morgan Cafe and definitely the dinner on Friday night. I have my eye on that beef wellington.
Pros: Ambiance, Food, Service
Cons: Can get loud

Based on two dinners, TMDR delivers a wonderful overall experience. The menu is brief but sufficiently varied and well chosen. The daily specials are recited without the chi-chi pomposity that gets eyes rolling in so many other places. The execution and presentation have been flawless. The short wine list is more than adequate and there is an ample choice of wines by the glass. The service is polite and professional. All that amidst the wonderful architecture and exhibits of one of New York's finest intimate museums... not to be missed. PS: reservartions are a must for the dining room.
Pros: Food, service, setting
Cons: Dinner served Friday evenings only
