just as good as NYC. Brand new to Portsmouth from NYC I have say Sake's sushi does not fall short of restauarants in New York City. Fresh Sushi, huge maki list, and most of all they have authentic japanese Shabu Shabu, for those of you know what this just go try it. Some wait staff may not be able to communicate english as well as you like but they get the job done. Charming, friendly place do try it if you are ever in town.
Don't miss the Red Bean, Green Tea, & GInger Ice cream (Fried or Regular).
I know it sounds odd but after living in Korea for a couple years where red bean desserts are common I was up to try Sake's Red Bean Fried Ice Cream. The group I was with was skeptical but the taste won them over & some ordered seconds. The green tea and ginger are also great.
The main coarse be it sushi, maki rolls, or noodles is wonderful too though the service can at times be slow.
best sushi in town, fun and friendly service. I've been going to sake since I was 17, when my parents first moved here they found sake and we've been going there twice a month every month for the past 7 years. the sushi is so fresh and consistant always so good! the owners will always says hi and make us feel like its our other home and the staff though have change through the 7 years but one thing stayed the same and its their friendly fast service, Look for their bake scallop in spicy sauce and alligator maki!
freshest fish in town. If you want wide selection of maki rolls and fresh sushi then sake is your place. I enjoy the fun names they have for rolls and the weekly specials. The staff is friendly and the service is fast and Terry which is one of the funniest, nicest waiter I've ever met. I love their spicy tuna sashimi, soo good!
Good Sushi.. Good Sushi, Good Sake. Not very expensive either. Very close to the parking garage and plenty of street parking spaces close by.
Sushi in Portsmouth. Sake has a wonderful selection of sushi and Hot and cold entree's from the kitchen and sushi Bar. I use to be a loyal patron of sake for 4 years, visiting at least 2-4 times a week. The sad part is the staff are completly unfriendly, polite to the point of rudenss, I was getting so tired of being ignored at the door as staff would walk pass me and not even bother to look at us. service is slow and they often get orders wrong. The food is fantastic but after 4 years of being treated like an invisable person I decided I would start to visit Sakura as the staff are super nice, no full bar, just beer and wine and thats the disapointment, the portions are smaller then sake and its a tad bit more expensive but at least they recognise you as a customer even after you have only visited twice.A much happier place, more laughter, better atmosphere and very, very good service with a big bright smile!!***
Local Jem. The decor is above average, seems that they started to decorate the whole place but only finished half. Food is EXCELLENT. Price is above average, but the food I think is worth it.
Freshest Sushi Around. I've frequently visited Sake over the years and continually bring friends along for thier fresh sushi as well as creative rolls. Their cooked entrees and appetizers are always delicious and well priced. The waitstaff are prompt, friendly, and courteous and the atmosphere is relaxing. Definitely my choice for Japanese food in Portsmouth!
Usually good food. Very shaky service. Sake emphisizes traditional sashimi and sushi dishes. Unfortunately, food quality is highly dependant on the chef. The waitstaff is traditionally dressed and wonderfully polite, but repeatedly makes serious presentation errors. In 3 of 7 visits my appetizer arrived at the conclusion of my meal. Better chefs and stricter floor management are needed ASAP to improve this restaurant.
What Happened?. I moved from NYC to the Seacoast of NH in 2001. I have eaten in many great sushi restaurants. I began frequenting Sake at that time, going about once every two months. At first I thought the fish and rolls were as good as many of the very good sushi restaurants in NYC, like YAMA, for example. I went to Sake today, after not having been there for 4 months...it was not good....quite below average! The pieces were bland, pale, and the toro was filled with tough connective tissue. The rolls were lackluster as well. Everything I had tonight, I have had there many times before, and it was no where near as good. The service was inattentive and it was a bit dirty. I don't think I will go there again anytime soon.
