An intimate Italian restaurant serving quality food at reasonable prices. Who could ask for more? How about quality/friendly waitstaff? Check. Most of the waitresses have been employed at Alexander's for numerous years. They are MORE than willing to discuss any questions you may have concerning the menu ... or anything else. Just ask. How about a reliable menu serving authentic Italian cuisine? Check. Many dishes (on the menu) cannot be found north of the North End of Boston. The amazing chefs have been preparing these meals for decades. How about a quaint restaurant nestled in the fields of New England? This restaurant is a little gem! If you are an individual who craves the mundane "Italian-chains", with the ambiance of McDonalds, you will not be happy here. Thankfully, I can appreciate this restaurant for what it has been and remains to be ... great food + good people.+ reasonable prices.
Thank you Alexander's for many happy memories!
Real scoop on Alexanders – Know what you're getting and it will be great. Alexanders is basic good food. The Marinara sauce is unequaled. Anything "parmesan" is awesome. White pizza is legendary. Any pasta with usual italian sides is fab. Salads are fresh and adequate.
Wine selections are decent and reasonably priced.
Go for anything mildly gourmet, look for seafood "just cooked through" look for anything fantasmagoric and avante garde and you loose.
Pluses: warm, welcoming and really great prices.
Minuses: nothing, unless you're looking for a different experience.
Excellent, as always! – I don?t know where these negative reviews are coming from. My family has been going here for years, every few months, and it?s my choice for celebrating Mothers? Day and my birthday. I was a bit worried when we walked in last night at 6:30 on a Saturday night, to find only half the tables filled, but it filled up later. The portion sizes and flavors were the same as they have always been- perfect! We always get the white pizza and veal parmesan, and it was excellent, as always. Our out of town guests enjoyed their lamb and chicken parmesan. The service was prompt, ambiance great, and we will keep coming back!
Still our favorite restaurant – My wife and I travel from Portsmouth approx. 3 times monthly to Alexander's. We have been doing this for approx. 20 years. The service is outstanding - the "new" owner is most pleasant and gracious - she has also added fresh flowers to every table. The egg plant parm., the spaghetti sauce, the sweet sausage, the white pizza, excellent salads.....I have NEVER had a bad meal there. Our long attendance speaks for itself! Give it a try - you won't be sorry!!!
Alexanders- Still The Best – There are so many conflicting reviews on Alexanders, which I suppose is to be expected-however the majority rules-Alexander's Rocks. Yes, it is true that the managment has turned hands-Alex and his family left to the new female owner.. but the chef(s) My Father and Uncle (The Drake Boys) Have been there since 1980 and the food continues to be fantastic. Most of the waitresses have been there 10 plus years.. and the ones that WERE rude and obxious are noticebly gone now. So if you're in the mood for a great meal at a decent price.. you'll love Alexanders!
Exceptional food and great value – I can't understand the wide swing in reviews of Alexander's. Is someone trying to sabotage them?
Having frequented Alexander's for a very long time, I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal there. I have had many many exceptional dinners. Our children and their friends now continue to support this restaurant. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable (many have been there for years). The new owner has tried to keep the menu the same, and she has added new items. Their white pizza is phenomenal, their artichoke hearts rival any I have eaten anywhere and their veal dishes are delicious. Try it, you will not be disappointed. The value is also great. These aren't Portsmouth prices.
Alexanders resturant – Allthough alexanders changed hands the drake boys who have been cooks at the resturant since 1980 the quality price and food you can't beat! If anyone can find a chicken parmbetter than ale's please let me know??I'm a regular!
Poor management, poor wait staff, poor food – I live near this restaurant and FYI--it changed hands for those who haven't been there in a while. What a difference a couple of years makes. The management was exceptionally rude to us when we voiced our concern about the food, poor service and new management policies. I could not understand the reason for the huge discrepancy in food and attitude from one visit to the prior visit--until I found out that it had been sold. In short, the place that I liked is gone. On another occasion, I sat to eat and was greated with the smell of stale air and plastic. The restaurant could use a good cleaning and airing out as it smells musty. The waitress was unfriendly and when our pasta was overcooked, we were told that it would not be redone. The parking lot is often empty and when I asked management to deal with my poorly cooked meal, she claimed she had other customers. WHERE/ The bathroom was dirty, especially on the floor in the corners, and smelled of urine. There are cobwebs on the decorations in the dining room--probably because there isn't that great a turn over. The pasta was limp and the sauce was mediocre. The most unfriendly restaurant crew I have ever met. Limited desert menu--and the cake was bland and dry. A terrible experience. I regret that I can't find one positive thing to say about this place.
Don't go unless you want poor quality, and really bad wait staff – I went to this restaurant seeking a wonderful time out with my wife. Though we sat right down, the waitress was really rude. When we ordered the meal my wife asked a question on the menu and when the food was served, it was wrong. She told the waitress who then blamed her. She said she would fix it, but after 20 minutes the waitress came back and said you really don't want that anymore. Well long and short, no apologizes, no good food, and still paid full price. I could go on, but instead would have been better off at Burger King. They may get it right.
